The 21st winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 27th September 1796 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Ambrosio, a bay colt by Sir Peter out of Tulip, owned by Mr Joseph Cookson. A field of 7 runners contested the race, although there were 15 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 375 Guineas. (Equivalent to £41,300 in 2017)

After his odds on victory in the St Leger, securing a first Classic for owner Mr Cookson, Ambrosio contested the Doncaster Cup the next day but was beaten into third place behind Hambletonian and Sober Robin.
